Yesterday's Reflection

Wednesday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time

Reflection

How long will you straddle? In your twenties the straddling is the default cultural position - present in the faith community, engaged enough not to have left, not committed enough for the faith to cost anything significant. The people on Mount Carmel did not answer Elijah's question. The non-answer is the straddling.

The fire falls for them - for the people standing between two options, unable to choose. Elijah's prayer is pastoral: answer me so this people may know who you are. The evidence is given not for the already-convinced but for the undecided. The Lord is God becomes thinkable and then undeniable.

Do not think I came to abolish. I came to fulfill. The smallest commandment matters. The person who keeps and teaches even the least is called great in the kingdom. The fulfillment is not the relaxation of the Law but its completion - the living-out of what the Law was always pointing at, from the inside, with the whole person.

The Challenge

How long will you straddle? Name the specific commitment you have been avoiding - the step from presence to actual following. Make it this week. The fire falls for the people who are almost-but-not-yet.

One Prayer

Lord, let me stop straddling. If you are God I will follow you - not straddling the issue. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.
