Yesterday's Reflection

Wednesday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time

The Reading

You will show me the path of life, fullness of joy in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever. - Psalm 16:11

Reflection

The path of life is shown to the person who has chosen - who has kept the Lord before them at all times, who has said: you are my allotted portion, my cup, my inheritance. The fullness of joy is not the absence of trouble. It is the presence of the one in whose presence there is fullness.

Elijah's prayer at Carmel is one sentence: answer me so this people may know you are God. The fire that falls is the answer to that prayer - not dramatic display for its own sake but the evidence that enables the people to stop straddling. They fall prostrate: the Lord is God, the Lord is God.

The smallest commandment matters. Whoever keeps even the smallest and teaches others to do so will be called great. The woman who keeps the faith in the particular small ways - the daily prayer, the examined conscience, the honest word - is doing what the keeping-and-teaching of the least commandment looks like. The greatness is in the faithful small.

The Challenge

Fullness of joy in your presence. Name one practice this week that puts you in his presence rather than near it - not thinking about the Lord but actually with him. The path of life leads to that fullness. Walk a section of it deliberately this week.

One Prayer

Lord, keep me in your presence. Let the path you show me be the path I walk. Let the fullness be real and not theoretical. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you. Amen.
